Tickets to Paradise

The narrator, a railroad construction man waiting at a coastal depot, is recruited by an archaeologist, Dr. Champ Chadwick, for an impromptu expedition into a rugged interior in search of a black Ice Stone said to be a time-warp spanning half a million years. They travel by truck through ruined towns, salt flats, and folded hills, making field observations about buried foundations and local lore, following faint signs of habitation, encountering unexpected smoke, and confronting a growing sense of the uncanny as practical excavation and legend converge toward a hidden phenomenon.
