Ticket to the Stars

A pilot becomes determined to learn why men who travel on a deep-space run return changed and accompanied by an Ideal, an irresistible companion who unsettles their lives. After witnessing a friend’s violent rejection of his Ideal and hearing that another returnee’s wife killed herself, the narrator transfers to the Stardust Overdrive to investigate firsthand. He confronts jealousy, temptation, and moral strain as relationships fray and loyalties are tested, and the narrative probes how an uncanny attraction from beyond familiar experience can undermine domestic bonds and force men to choose between home and the pull of the stars.
