Lord Lister No. 0398: Duister New-York

Set during a New York crime wave, the story begins when wealthy broker Albert Clapham disappears and his house is found in chaos with nine bound men but no owner. Public attention turns to a mysterious London burglar, John Raffles, whose sudden, violent interventions have handed several gang members to the police. A condemned prisoner implicates Clapham in an alliance with Black Pete and the Girl with the Madonna Eyes and claims that Raffles was seized and held in a remote villa where a mechanical device was prepared to kill him slowly. Police searches uncover signs of a fierce struggle and two corpses, yet key figures remain missing and the mystery deepens.
