About This Book
A young man stationed near a palace becomes consumed by love for a noblewoman and undertakes a desperate public gesture to see her, which leads to his arrest for desertion. The action shifts between his private songs and melancholic reflection and formal military procedure, while the noblewoman, moved by pity, intervenes to plead for mercy as officers debate strict regulations. The drama unfolds in acts and scenes that interrogate the clash between personal desire and institutional duty, the effects of stifling upbringing on impulse and identity, and the heightened emotional tone of romantic melancholy.
