About This Book
A traveler stranded in a rural region takes shelter in a decaying Southern mansion and becomes entangled in its occupant's grim recollection of a malignant, snakelike coil of hair and a haunted portrait whose presence brought obsession, misfortune, and a violent death. The narrator pieces together past events as efforts are made to destroy the objects and contain their contagious malevolence. The tale blends atmospheric travelogue, family secret, and gothic supernatural horror.
