Survival factor

A pair of human surveyors, Wallace and Saxton, flee an automated alien pursuit device and make an emergency landing on a harsh, Earth-like planet. Short on provisions and trapped by the electronic bloodhound's perimeter, they weigh options to hide or risk another jump while they study atmospheric readings. Outside the ship they encounter a gaunt native who unexpectedly communicates in their language and leads them away, prompting puzzlement about how the native learned Earthian and whether the encounter signals prior contact or intelligence beyond appearances. The narrative focuses on survival choices, technological vulnerability, and the uneasy meeting of disparate cultures.
