About This Book
A single-act domestic farce unfolds when a notorious returned thief appears at a rural home, triggering gossip, moralizing visitors and a pursuit outside. A young woman suspects him of stealing a keepsake and plots to expose him while a zealous lay preacher, an energetic landlady and other townsfolk swarm the room. The intruder alternately flatters and pilfers, hiding items in drawers as entrances and exits multiply. Hiding places, overheard plans and comic misunderstandings build tense hilarity that juxtaposes petty criminality, social posturing and village superstition in a tight, quickly shifting stage scene.
