A traveler trapped by a snowstorm takes refuge in an isolated, medieval-like house and becomes entangled in a local mystery surrounding a small copper container. Encounters with the household’s guarded occupants, a probing reporter, the arrival of a second stranger, and the revelations of a dying man propel an investigation into hidden family ties and a cryptic motto. Through midnight warnings, recovered testimony, and methodical inquiries, obscured motives and relationships are gradually uncovered, culminating in a resolution that explains the object's role and the human actions that produced the crime.
