About This Book

In a future adjudicated duel over control of radiant heat, two nations accept strict conditions: five large remote-controlled aero-ships per side, nonexplosive armament, and an uninhabited rented war territory. Spectators watch as controlled vessels maneuver and exchange fire through smoke screens; early losses thin the fleets. A young American radio-pilot unexpectedly commands three ships, suffers an accidental self-detonation of two vessels, then fights the remaining Ariel against a famed mercenary's Yuen. Through risky maneuvers and mechanical failures, the Ariel's damaged wing collides with the Yuen, causing its destruction and securing victory and the disputed revenue, while the pilot becomes a celebrated figure.
