About This Book
A largely Araucanian man ekes out a modest life and nurses an infatuation with a nearly white woman. Three ragged white strangers arrive by canoe; their strange gaiety, hunger, and one man's authoritative presence terrify him but also provoke pride in his diluted white ancestry. They ravenously consume his food and brag about inaccessible wealth while one wears a sturdy pair of boots. Torn between fear, covetousness, and devotion, he contemplates the boots and ultimately performs a singular, daring act that resolves his inner conflict.
