The city’s ruler, the Sindara, consults rival sorcerers and discards their implements, then seeks his god and receives knowledge of the creature’s feeding by literal fusion with other beings. Electing a sacrificial remedy rather than conventional combat, the Sindara permits a horrific commingling with the entity at the gulf’s brink and plunges into the mist below, thereby ending the menace at the cost of his own life and the loss of his city’s watcher.
