The narrative follows Aleix, an elderly truffle hunter who moves through a rugged rural valley and becomes the focus of rumor and envy. Villagers spin fantastic tales about his age and buried savings while children flee at his approach. He follows a meticulous routine—tracking scents with his dogs, digging carefully for truffles, cleaning and storing each find—then returns to a ruined cottage, muttering curses and taunting his neighbors. The text observes how superstition, poverty, resentment, and isolation shape communal life and everyday rhythms in a small, tense rural community.
