A three-act comic play in verse follows two young lovers who meet and court across a mossy garden wall that separates the estates of their quarrelling fathers. They read romantic poetry, plot secret engagements and imagine theatrical means to overcome family hostility, while parents and neighbors supply comic obstacles. The piece playfully parodies romantic conventions and stage effects, contrasting youthful idealism and imagination with social pettiness, and uses witty verse and staged incidents to explore how performance, fantasy and contrivance can both complicate and ultimately aim to reconcile entrenched enmity.
