The Knights of Arthur

A narrator travels through a partially collapsed, commandeered city accompanied by Arthur, a compact mechanical typewriter with an eyestalk, while trying to keep possession of booby-trapped luggage. He bribes hotel staff, adopts an alias, and navigates guarded department stores to acquire equipment and supplies, encountering improvised security, opportunistic workers, and scarce resources. The narrative traces pragmatic survival tactics, urban improvisation, and the uneasy relationship between human agency and portable technology as small-scale schemes and barters replace ordinary commerce.
