About This Book

The collection presents a chronological portrait of a nineteenth-century astronomer through family recollections, personal letters, and diary entries. It describes early home life and self-education, the practical labors of observational astronomy including instrument repair and the discovery of a comet, and a career balancing teaching, public lectures, and library work. Travel narratives record visits across the United States and Europe, encounters with scientific institutions and contemporaries, and candid observations on society and slavery. Interspersed reflections reveal methods, scientific computation, practical problem solving, and personal philosophy about duty, education, and the challenges faced by a woman in the scientific world.

Maria Mitchell

Maria Mitchell (1818-1889) was an American astronomer, educator, and women's rights advocate, recognized as one of the first female astronomers in the United States. She gained prominence for her discovery of a comet in 1847, which was later named "Miss Mitchell's Comet" in her honor. Mitchell was a pioneer in promoting women's education in the sciences and served as a professor of astronomy at Vassar College. Her contributions to astronomy and her advocacy for women's rights are documented in her notable work, "Maria Mitchell: Life, Letters, and Journals," which provides insight into her life and the challenges she faced as a woman in a male-dominated field.
