About This Book

This collection sets out a concise Lutheran confession intended to clarify which points of doctrine could be conceded and which could not in a proposed council, organized as a preface and a series of articles. It affirms justification by faith, limits sacramental efficacy to God's word and grace, rejects papal claims and corrupt ceremonial authority, and defines true excommunication as ecclesiastical exclusion of unrepentant sinners. It defends the right of communities to ordain ministers when bishops fail, permits clerical marriage, condemns enforced celibacy and monastic vows, and emphasizes that good works follow but do not merit justification.

Martin Luther

Martin Luther (1483-1546) was a seminal figure in the Protestant Reformation, known for his theological writings and advocacy for reform within the Catholic Church. His influential works include "A Treatise on Good Works" and "Commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians," which reflect his views on faith, grace, and the authority of scripture. Luther's translation of the Bible into German made the scriptures accessible to the laity, significantly impacting Christian practice and literacy. His "Small Catechism" remains a key text in Lutheran education, emphasizing the importance of personal faith and understanding of Christian doctrine.
