About This Book
The story opens in Paris with a proud young vicomte affronting Paul Déroulède over a slight, setting off a formal duel and revealing social tensions. Déroulède later rescues a fainting young woman, Juliette, from a hostile crowd and becomes entangled in a web of attraction, jealousy, and obligation. Across encounters with fashionable society, gambling-rooms, and political unrest, secrets and vows of reparation drive schemes of revenge and sacrifice. The plot balances episodes of honor, danger, and romantic complication while examining how personal pride and moral courage shape loyalties and outcomes.
