The Last Monster

The narrative alternates between the solitary last member of an ancient alien race, guardian of a dead planet and holder of a secret of immortality, and a desperate Earth crew racing to find radium to halt a contagious Plague. A fast spacecraft controlled by Emerson carries four men whose lives and loved ones depend on success as they reach a mist-shrouded city and confront a tentacled monstrosity whose home defenses and mysterious power defy Earth weapons. The story examines loneliness, the ethical and practical costs of survival, and the clash between alien antiquity and human urgency.
