Not in the Script

The story follows playwright Jules Barnes who is recruited by Captain Colen Shratt and global authorities to compose and stage a theatrical deception designed to mislead an approaching Martian envoy. Told that the visitors will judge Earth's readiness for space and may attack if they believe humans are technologically advanced, Barnes must write and rapidly direct a continent-spanning performance portraying governments, industries, and scientists as backward and ineffectual. The narrative traces the pressure of the deadline, the logistical and ethical complications of orchestrating a planetary-scale charade, and the tension between appearance and reality when survival depends on a convincing illusion.
