About This Book

The author records extended journeys through the eastern provinces of the Ottoman Empire, offering sequential travelogues of routes, towns, lakes and mountain ascents, with vivid topographical and ethnographic description. Chapters trace crossings of Lake Van, visits to Van, Bitlis, Mush and Erzerum, excursions to volcanic craters and peaks such as Sipan, and return passages across border ranges. Interspersed are photographic and sketch plates, maps, and practical notes. Concluding sections provide geographical, statistical and political surveys, a bibliography, and appendices including an account of the Armenians' communal constitution and scientific analyses of regional lakes.
