About This Book

The work traces the region's development from ancient settlement and Romanization through medieval feudal fragmentation, the growth of commerce and urban communes, and the consolidation under late medieval territorial rulers. It examines economic and cultural transformations driven by trade and cloth manufacture, the flowering of Flemish art and music, and the impact of Reformation-era religious conflict and political revolt that led to a north–south separation. Later chapters follow Habsburg and other foreign domination, shifting commercial centers, the rise and decline of economic fortunes, and the gradual emergence of modern institutions and national contours up to the early twentieth century.
