Numbering

The original text used six series of numbers:
Book: Roman numeral in body text; boldface Arabic numeral in Index.
Chapter: Roman numeral in body text; second Arabic numeral in Index.
Recipe: Boldface Arabic numeral in margin; third Arabic numeral (if present) in Index. The first recipe in a chapter is usually—but not always—given a number 1 in the body text.
Schuch numbering: The continuous numbering, 1–478, from the 1874 Schuch edition is shown in parentheses in the margin.
Page and line numbers are used in the critical apparatus and in the Addenda et Corrigenda. They are retained in this e-text for completeness, but all information is also given in book-chapter-recipe form.

All recipe citations, whether original or added by the transcriber, have been formatted to match the Index.
